Learn to Sail

Every year, our Year 4, 5 and 6 students enjoy a fun day on the water as part of the Volvo Learn to Sail programme out of Manly Sailing Club.

The programme is intended to give the students exposure to the fun of sailing in the lovely waters of Whangaparaoa Peninsula. The Year 4 students experiment with the Bics and, while they are faster than the Optimists, they realise that they are also a lot more prone to being capsized, especially when the wind picks up. However, most of them are undeterred by the occasional drenching and, by the end of the day, start to master the tiller and main sheet.  On the final day, the Year 6 students spend their time in Optimists, tacking up and down the beach and racing against each other. After three days of fun, thrills and spills, everyone has had the opportunity to try something new and it encourages students to become more involved in sailing and to join a local sailing club.
