Windmills!

In Science we have been learning to recognise that ‘Pushes and Pulls’ are classified as Forces.

The weather played right into our hands (literally) by providing an extremely windy day – the perfect opportunity to investigate how wind works as a Force.

Have a look at our lovely fun with windmills!

DROP, COVER, HOLD!

Today, Thursday 18th of October at 9.30am we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out.

The purpose of the Shake Out is to ensure that our children know what to do if there is an Earthquake.

We learned to DROP, COVER and HOLD!

We talked about finding the safest places to do this when we are outside, or if there are no tables to shelter under inside.

We are going to ask our families to help us come up with a plan at home so that we know what to do, wherever we are!

Have a look at us – shaking-out!

Flower Power!

Spring has sprung!

Wow!  What creative students we have here at Wentworth Primary School.

To finish off a fantastic Term 3, the Years 1 – 4 immersed themselves into an exciting Tech Challenge.

In teams they were to create a flower inspired costume using only paper, sellotape and string.  The models then had to walk around two courts to demonstrate the robust and sturdy nature of the costumes, and to show off their exquisite aesthetic designs!

Have a look at the amazing creations designed by our youngest students!

Enjoy your holiday break!

May the Mathematics Force be with you!

Today our students took part in the annual Parents vs Students Mathematics competition.

As ALWAYS, the students shone and won the competition.

Thank you so much to all of our friends and families who came to participate and/or cheer us on.

It was such a fun day and it was wonderful to see how many grown-ups can still Hula Hoop!

We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Wentworth has talent!

Today we were treated to a special performance by one of our Year 4 friends.

She showed us the Hulusi – a Chinese instrument, also known as the Cucurbit Flute.

We were fascinated by the different tones the flute could make and we even thought that it reminded us of the sounds of Bagpipe music.

Listen to this excellent rendition of ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’ – we even joined in for a little ‘sing-along’.

Laptop fun!

Computational Thinking as a curriculum subject encompasses learning in areas such as ICT, Programming, E-safety and Digital Media.

This week we deviated from our Bee Bot work to focus on getting to grips with the fundamentals of a laptop.  We loved exploring the magical powers of the ‘Backspace’, ‘Caps Lock’ and ‘Enter’ functions on our keyboard.

We will continue to navigate our way around a laptop ensuing that we are able to open, use and close ‘Word’ documents independently.

Karearea can RUN!

The weather was kind as our Karearea lined up for the start of our annual cross-country event.

Each member of the Year 1 class set themselves a goal and worked hard towards reaching this target during training sessions, in preparation for the big day!

It was a fun event…… almost as much fun as the ice-block we had at the end of the race!

The warm-up

On your marks… Get set… Go!

All finished! Well done Karearea!

Hei Tiki

Welcome to Term 3.

We have had an extremely busy start to our new term and we are very excited about the School Production that will be taking place in the final week of Term 3.

During Week 2 we began our introduction to Sculpture and our focus has been on the Hei Tiki.

We are beginning to understand the significance of the Tiki and we are designing our own Hei Tiki.

Karearea can swim!

Karearea can swim!

Our two week swimming sessions ended a very busy Term 2.

The progress that our class made has been significant!

Despite the fact that our Karearea’s have been fighting the inevitable winter chills, they turned up each day with smiles on their faces ready to master their new swimming skills.

Have a look at some of the fun we have had!

I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes….. I saw…

I might be the only one singing the Ace of Base song “I saw the sign” as I read the title of this blog however it is very relevant to our Karearea class at the moment as we have been learning about the ways in which signs communicate important information to us.

Our Karearea class went walk-about this week and looked at the signs that

‘TELL US WHAT TO DO’,

‘WARN US TO BE CAREFUL’ and the signs that

‘INVITE US TO SAFELY MOVE THIS WAY’.

We were so surprised to realise that signs give us such a lot of information and they often use few, if any, words.  We looked at signs from other countries and delighted in the fact that we understood them.

Have a look at some of the signs we were very interested in and ask us what these mean.

Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day

It was a very special morning at Wentworth Primary yesterday.  Our Grandparents and whanau came into school.  It was a pleasure sharing our classroom with our family and it was lovely hearing about some of the experiences our grandparents had when they were at school.

We were shocked and bemused at the notion of ‘the cane’ as a form of discipline.
One grandparent shared some photos of their school, calf club, milk bottles and dress-up day.
We heard a little about school in China……we were surprised to hear that there were 60 children in ONE class!

We loved hearing about waiting outside before school, having to sing the national anthem whilst the NZ flag was raised and then marching into class.  Very different to our morning!

One of our Karearea class members was delighted to receive a video message and a letter from grandparents whom are overseas.  This certainly made a few eyes in the room moisten…….mine definitely!

Thank you to the Karearea families for visiting with us today.  We are privileged to have you in our lives and you are such an important part of our learning journey.  Thank you for taking the time to share our morning with us and feel free to stop by ANYTIME!
