Intensive Swimming Lessons

Well, the first week of our intensive Swim School lessons have gone…swimmingly! Everyone has learnt a lot and had a lot of fun while doing it!

It has been great to see the Ruru Class continue their fabulous “give it a go” attitude. Although it has been a tiring week, we all agreed we are all looking forward to getting back in the water next week!

The Best Mathematicians in the World!

The Ruru Class have been trying SUPER HARD in Maths time! I have been absolutely amazed at how fast and brilliant their minds are!

They are learning to add REALLY big numbers and are sometimes faster than I am!

They are very proud of themselves…just look at these smart cookies!

Term 2

At the beginning of Term 2 the class completed their assessments. I was really impressed with how much of a positive attitude the children had towards these.

We are now back to lessons as usual, and the children have been learning lots of new and exciting things.

In English we have been exploring Myths and Legends. The class have read a variety of these and even acted some out. Here are some photos of groups of children adding more to the story of ‘The Sword in the Stone’.

In Maths we have been working on Number and Place Value. This term, we have been including decimal numbers. The children have fully embraced paired games and challenges.

We are starting Science this term with our topic ‘The way we see things’. We will be exploring light. So far, we have looked inside a box with various possible light sources inside, to identify which are light sources and how we know.

Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying their sessions with Gracie from Pform. Each week, they have been having drama sessions in the dance studio, with the year 4 children.

This term in Global Perspectives our topic is ‘How can we stay healthy?’

The class have discussed the things we may need to stay healthy and worked in collaboration to put these things in order from the most important to least important.

Next week, we look forward to visiting Tiritiri Matangi with years 3 and 4. I hope to share some photos from this trip in our next class blog.

The sun was shining and the Hihi birds were singing!

The sun was shining and the Hihi birds were singing!

We had a fantastic trip to Tiritiri Matangi last week.

The stunning weather enabled us to see some beautiful New Zealand birds.

Our highlight was seeing the Hihi – we were thrilled to spot both a male and female Hihi!

We also saw three Wetapunga.  This stunning insect can grow as big as 10cm in body length – Mrs McLeish was pleased that the one we saw wasn’t as big as that!

We absolutely appreciated the expertise of Tiritiri Matangi guides and we also want to send out a big THANK YOU to all of our helpers!  We couldn’t do it without your support!

I know that I can’t wait until our next visit!

Chess Masters

Wow! Well done to all our brilliant chess players, who attended the Hibiscus Coast Chess Tournament – you played strongly and showed wonderful sporting behaviour – win, lose or draw!

Nailbiting tension as the tournament drew to a close…

Congratulations, Ananda! Tournament Champion!

ChessPower Knockout badge acquired!

Tiritiri Matangi

What a beautiful day to visit this wonderful island sanctuary, right here on our doorstep!

We picked up any rubbish we found on the beach.

We spotted so many different birds!

Not even the biggest wetapunga on the island!

Have a wonderful holiday break!

It has been a very long but very fun Term 1.

I can’t believe that it has come to an end.

I want to wish the Hihi class a wonderful and safe holiday break and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2!

Lest we forget!

On our last day of term our entire school gathered together to make poppies in remembrance of our ANZAC heroes.

Our challenge was to make the tallest poppy possible using only 20 sheets of newspaper, 4 sheets of red paper, one sheet of black paper, string, sellotape and scissors.

The results were creative, stunning and it was very special seeing our poppies standing tall in the school gymnasium.

We all developed our leadership skills.  We learned to effectively work together towards a common goal by communicating clearly as well as diplomatically.

It was a fun challenge and the poppy heads have been displayed in the hallway at school.  Please pop in and check them out!

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!

Mini-camp

We certainly missed our Year 4, 5 and 6 friends when they went to camp but we were determined not to miss out on the fun!

On Friday 29th March we had our very own MINI-CAMP here at school.

The weather was not on our friend so we pitched our tents inside.  We made pikelet batter and Mr D cooked them on the BBQ for us.  They were delicious!

We then had our friends teach us some hand games and we sang camp songs.

It was a fantastic day!

Happy Holidays!

Wow! We finished the term in sp-egg-tacular fashion…

This morning we had a whole school technology challenge, where our groups had to make the tallest freestanding poppy they could using only 20 sheets of newspaper and some red and black paper for the flower.

This was followed by the last Y6 sausage sizzle of the year. Thank you to everyone who has supplied sausages, cooked or bought and eaten the sausages!

Finally, we made Easter Bunny baskets and filled them with chocolate eggs.

Well done on a great term, Parera Class – have a wonderful break and get ready for another busy term starting in two weeks!!!!

Fascinating Angles

We have been learning how to recognise and measure angles.  To help use find right angles we invented our own tools then tested them out.  It was really fascinating.

Speeding Ducks

Congratulations to Jessica, Brooke and Sam, who were selected to represent Wentworth Primary at the recent Interschool Swimming Championships. All three students gave it their best, with Sam making a number of Finals and placing second in 25m freestyle and butterfly; 5th in Individual Medley; 5th in 25m backstroke and 4th in 25m breaststroke.
