Debating

The importance of emotional intelligence in educating students for future tertiary studies and career opportunities and advancement is well understood at Wentworth.

The ability to speak confidently in public is a very valuable skill and students’ oratory skills are reinforced through House and inter-school speech and debating competitions.

The Debating Club
A wide range of age groups participate in lunch time debates, from Year 9 through to Year 13. Some students are regular competitors whilst others come along just to watch. It is great to see our Wentworth students fine–tuning their argumentative skills. Our experienced Year 13 debaters are always on hand to lead their teams, mentor the younger students, or to adjudicate and act as time-keepers.

The Year 10 Debating Competition
In Term 3, a debating competition is held between the two Year 10 English classes. Each team has four speakers. Experienced Year 13 debaters are on hand to judge. It is always a fun experience.

Inter-school debates usually take place in the evening on week nights, and involve travelling to various schools around Auckland.
