Every second year, Wentworth Primary School celebrates Grandparents Day. It is an honour and a privilege to host many grandparents and surrogate grandparents to the school. It is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and acknowledge the important role that grandparents play in their grandchild’s life.
The day starts with a welcoming assembly and song then the grandparents are invited to go to class with their grandchild. The students thoroughly enjoy having the grandparents at the school. It is wonderful to share the day and hear about their experiences from when they were in school. We love hearing about having to wait outside before school and having to sing the national anthem whilst the NZ flag was raised, then marching to class. Very different to our mornings!
Morning tea is an opportunity for the grandparents to have a cuppa and participate in some of the playground games.
Sometimes students don’t have anyone who can attend; don’t worry, lots of children don’t. A family member or friend is always welcome or the children enjoy adopting a grandparent for the day. We even have Grandparents from overseas who send special video messages or letters on the day.
