House Structure

Wentworth College enjoys a traditional ‘House’ structure with positive, competitive inter-House competitions.

All students in Wentworth are assigned to one of three Houses: McDonald, Findlay and Fleming. These are the names of the founders of the College. Students, and their families, become very excited cheering for their House when it comes to Inter-House sporting challenges such as Swimming and Athletics days.

Throughout the year, House points are awarded over a number of sporting and academic competitions, ranging from Athletics days, to inter-House activities such as reading challenges, and spelling bees. The House structure is evident in daily College life, and the winning House at the end of the year is recognised with the College House cup.

House Tutor Groups – small groups of Years 7-13 students meet daily with a teacher to share school information and notices. The mixed year levels in the Tutor group see older students supporting younger students and a chance to mix with students not in their year level.

Inter-House Competitions – Safe, structured competition is healthy for young people and our Inter-House competitions encourage competitive spirit and builds camaraderie and the desire to succeed.

Leadership Opportunities – Student House Captains organise events and rally the students in their House. Leadership and student support opportunities exist within each House with older students assisting in coaching and mentoring the younger members.

House fundraising – Each term one of our three Houses chooses a charity to help us think outside the comfort of our own world. The aim of the charity is explained in Assembly, often supported by a guest speaker from the charity, and money raised as a group helps develop a sense of community responsibility.

2019 House Charities

Term 1 – Findlay House chose local charity Love Soup Hibiscus Coast that provides and makes food for those in need.  Students were asked to bring in cans of food and a huge collection was gathered and delivered.

Term 2 – Fleming House chose the charity Foster Hope, raising money by hosting a lunchtime pyjama party in the Hall to raise funds to buy nightware for children entering foster care, often with no belongings to their name.

Term 3 – McDonald House selected raising money for the local Manly Fire Brigade since our caretaker, Mr Pelikani, is a volunteer fireman. Students organised an inter-House coin competition, a mufti day and bake sale, raising over $800.

2018 House Charities

Term 1 – McDonald House chose Epilepsy New Zealand charity raising money and awareness during a purple themed mufti-day.

Term 2 – Fleming House chose Give a Kid a Blanket charity donating over 185 warm items such as clothes, blankets and hot water bottles to families struggling in the greater Auckland area.

Term 3 – Findlay House chose Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre and raised the most money out of all the fundraising in 2018 to help provide safe spaces and services for youth in trouble in our community.
