DROP, COVER, HOLD!

Today, Thursday 18th of October at 9.30am we participated in the New Zealand Shake Out.

The purpose of the Shake Out is to ensure that our children know what to do if there is an Earthquake.

We learned to DROP, COVER and HOLD!

We talked about finding the safest places to do this when we are outside, or if there are no tables to shelter under inside.

We are going to ask our families to help us come up with a plan at home so that we know what to do, wherever we are!

Have a look at us – shaking-out!

Flower Power!

Spring has sprung!

Wow!  What creative students we have here at Wentworth Primary School.

To finish off a fantastic Term 3, the Years 1 – 4 immersed themselves into an exciting Tech Challenge.

In teams they were to create a flower inspired costume using only paper, sellotape and string.  The models then had to walk around two courts to demonstrate the robust and sturdy nature of the costumes, and to show off their exquisite aesthetic designs!

Have a look at the amazing creations designed by our youngest students!

Enjoy your holiday break!

Measurement

We are learning how to measure things using a ruler. Can you see all the classroom items we have been measuring??

Term 3, Weeks 4 – 7 Highlights.

Hi parents,

Now that we’re nearly at the end of Term 3, let me share with you a few highlights:

Science

We finished up our investigations of magnets, by making our own compasses from corks and needles. We can now attest that we’re going North when we exit through the classroom door!

Daniel now knows where North is, and is ready to go question Santa about a gift he never received.

These guys are giddy with excitement at their discoveries. Or corks in water looking like floating poops. Probably the latter.

Lately, we’ve been looking at the human skeleton. Below you’ll see photos of us comparing the measurements of our major bones.

“My vertebrae are more impressive than yours”

Dr Chen, prepares his patient for a lobotomy

Dylan, looking like he has all the makings of an excellent tailor.

Maths

Recently, we’ve had a focus on geometry: naming, drawing, and constructing three dimensional shapes.

Aston and Harper show that it’s not just girls that are known for their delicate craftsmanship.

Tiger juggles two cubes. Coming up: he swallows three tetrahedrons that are on fire.

Computational Thinking

The student’s have learnt a significant amount of computer skills this term, including how to use email, and how to use the Google suite (Google docs, Google Slides etc) to produce work.

Jack checks the status of his financial stocks, and decides whether to invest in bitcoin.

Literacy

Persuasive Writing and Speeches

We’ve had a focus this term on learning the features of effective persuasive writing and speaking. We’ve recently been practicing our oral language skills by sharing a page from a novel. We’re now in the process of writing our own speeches.

Konstantin decides that having to hold the book is for sissies

Grandpa Rensen enthralls us all with tales from long ago.

Storybooks

We’ve added another illustrated narrative to our storybooks this term.

Dylan’s latest is a war between robots and humans.

Luke’s latest is the story of a war between flies and spiders.
War! – what is it good for? Stories, if nothing else.

Art

In Art, we’ve had a focus on learning to draw and colour landscapes.

Poppy finishes giving her tree a “perm”.

Chelsea’s left hand takes a holiday, while her right hand is busy at work.

Production Rehearsal

As you would have heard, we have our major production coming up at the end of term. We’ve been busy learning and rehearsing all the songs and dances

At Wentworth we pride ourselves on students being able to know where their knees and ears are.

.

May the Mathematics Force be with you!

Today our students took part in the annual Parents vs Students Mathematics competition.

As ALWAYS, the students shone and won the competition.

Thank you so much to all of our friends and families who came to participate and/or cheer us on.

It was such a fun day and it was wonderful to see how many grown-ups can still Hula Hoop!

We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Run, Maki, run!!!

As always, the school cross-country event is a major fixture in the Wentworth Primary calendar. Our children have been in training – working on stamina, technique and strategy.

All our students completed the gruelling course with the results as follows:

1st place: Ken and Milla

2nd place: Rory and Annie

3rd place: Leo and Katie

Congratulations to all our competitors – you all did a fantastic job!

At the Interschools Cross-Country Event, Shakespear Park…

Wentworth has talent!

Today we were treated to a special performance by one of our Year 4 friends.

She showed us the Hulusi – a Chinese instrument, also known as the Cucurbit Flute.

We were fascinated by the different tones the flute could make and we even thought that it reminded us of the sounds of Bagpipe music.

Listen to this excellent rendition of ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’ – we even joined in for a little ‘sing-along’.

Laptop fun!

Computational Thinking as a curriculum subject encompasses learning in areas such as ICT, Programming, E-safety and Digital Media.

This week we deviated from our Bee Bot work to focus on getting to grips with the fundamentals of a laptop.  We loved exploring the magical powers of the ‘Backspace’, ‘Caps Lock’ and ‘Enter’ functions on our keyboard.

We will continue to navigate our way around a laptop ensuing that we are able to open, use and close ‘Word’ documents independently.

Karearea can RUN!

The weather was kind as our Karearea lined up for the start of our annual cross-country event.

Each member of the Year 1 class set themselves a goal and worked hard towards reaching this target during training sessions, in preparation for the big day!

It was a fun event…… almost as much fun as the ice-block we had at the end of the race!

Have a look at some of our Karearea class in full ‘flight’!

The warm-up

On your marks… Get set… Go!

All finished! Well done Karearea!

Fractions, Fractions and more Fractions

We have been on a self discovery journey learning about fractions using materials.  We are finding out what fractions are and how they work.

Firstly we wrote what we knew about fractions.

Then we played with fraction blocks to see what we could discover.

Below is us using the blocks to discover what they are.  We found out they have a bottom number and top number.  The bottom number tells us how many pieces the whole is cut into and the top number tells us how many of those we have.  We also found out they get smaller in size even though the bottom number gets bigger.

We then looked at making equivalent fractions using the blocks.  We know that the blocks have to fit under each other exactly for them to be equivalent.  It’s fun and interesting finding out which fractions are equivalent.  Aren’t we good at working fairly as a group, taking turns??

With information gathered from drawing around the fraction blocks to discover equivalent fractions, we began to look at how we could use our knowledge of multiplication to work out equivalent fractions.

Term 3, Weeks 1 – 3 Highlights

Hi parents,

Here’s some highlights from the term thus far…

New Students

At the start of Term 3, we had two young men join us: Konstantin and Ollie. Three weeks in, they’re part of the team, and it’s easy to forget that they’re new.

Konstantin and Ollie. Both always early for school because they don’t have to
waste time styling their hair.

Art

Early this term we finished our self portraits. They are hanging in the school hallway for you to check out, next time you are in.

Oscar in the early stages of a skin-graft

Daniel animated in more ways than one.

Topic

For topic, we’re taking a look at history. We’ll begin to focus on the 1920’s: the period of our upcoming school production.

Matching his place on the timeline, Tiger adopts the pose of a reclining Roman emperor

Science

We’ve been focusing on the properties and behaviour of magnets.

Ollie finds his bones and sinews are no match for magnetic force.

Konstantin gets a trail of magnets going

Harper made this himself at home: a magnetic contraption that causes two coins to stand upright.

Oscar uses magnets to become a hipster. Now he just needs skinny jeans.

Reading

We’ve been learning to participate in “Literacy Circles”. The students are in groups of 5, with each group reading the same novel. They have different roles to fulfil, such as “Discussion Director”, “Passage Picker”, “Word Master” etc. Every 3 days they have a discussion day where they discuss and share what they have prepared.

Claire ponders the far-reaching implications of Poppy’s statement. Or, she just wishes it was
her turn. Can’t remember which.

The boys are turning pages. An important skill to master when you are reading.

Ethan seems to literally have his nose in a book.

Luke and Dylan with their best “show me how much you love learning” faces

Cross Country

On Friday 10th August, we had our annual cross country event. An all around good effort and attitude from the Year 4’s. No tears, just flushed faces!
