Harold the Giraffe

Harold the Giraffe

We have been so lucky to have Harold, the Giraffe, and his friend Chris visit us from Life Education Trust.

Harold has been helping us to recognise and acknowledge feelings such as sadness, happiness and anger.  Harold reminded us of the important qualities of friendship and he showed us what it looks like to be a good friend.

We love it when Harold visits and we are already looking forward to seeing him next year!

Welcome to Year 5

Hello to all,

What a fantastic start we have had to year 5!

Firstly, I would like to say well done to all of the children for doing incredibly well in their assessments. Each child did their very best, and the results have informed our learning this year.

We have kick started Term 1 with lots of exciting learning:

In English we are reading Kensuke’s Kingdom – a wonderful adventure novel by Michael Morpurgo. We are already most of the way through the text, and at times finding it difficult to put down! It is wonderful to witness such engaged readers in action!

In Mathematics we have been looking at number and place value and have enjoyed working with a partner to play games and investigate with numbers.

In Science we are looking at flowering plants. In groups we have planted some fruit stones and are taking turns in watering them.

Missing Images

Last week we met Harold the Giraffe for some life education classes. Here we discussed what it means to be a good friend and what digital citizenship means. We also met Harold and enjoyed answering his questions, before having a little dance with him!

I am really pleased with how well the children have settled into life in a year 5 classroom. They are happy and really eager to learn. Keep up the good work! 🙂

It was lovely meeting you at our Meet the Teacher evening and for children to share their ILPs with you last week. As I mentioned to you all, please feel free to email me if you need to get in touch any time.

Performing Arts

We have been participating in Performing Arts with Gracie.  Gracie is extremely creative with what she is teaching us.  This week we had to get into groups and create different objects and animals in a limited time span.  It was heaps of fun.  See if you can figure out the objects and animals we created in the photos.  Another part were with a buddy one of us was a puppeteer the other person was the puppet and we had to mold them into the action Gracie told us.  Take a look at the photos below and see if you can guess what we are doing and creating.

Waitangi Day – The Hihi and Ruru Class Treaty

Today we discussed Waitangi Day.

The Hihi class acted out the role of the tangata whenua (Maori) of New Zealand, whilst our Ruru friends were the British settlers.

We explored the need to create a Treaty to ensure that we are all protected by fair rules, which we all created and agreed upon – see below………

Article One:
Be kind to each other.

Article Two:
Share traditions.

Article Three:
Look after our environment.

We then signed the treaty to demonstrate our commitment to upholding each of the ‘Three Articles’ in our Te Tiriti o Wentworth (The Treaty of Wentworth).

The Maori and British friends agreeing to share traditions.

Signing the Treaty!

Parera Class 2019

Hello, Year 6, and welcome to our new class for 2019! It’s going to be a lot of fun – we have so many things lined up for Term 1, including School Captain elections; a visit from Life Ed (featuring Harold the Giraffe); school swimming sports; and, of course, our residential at Shakespear Camp.

We have chosen the name of our class this year – it is Parera – the NZ grey duck. While you might think you can see (and hear) these birds everywhere, the truth is that they are an endangered breed and may well become extinct, due to cross-breeding with mallards.

Our timetable

We have PE on Mondays (Days 1 and 6) and Thursdays (Days 4 and 9) – please remember your full kits!

Homework is due on Mondays.

Orchestra is on Thursday lunchtime at the College. If you have been playing an instrument for around 6 months, you are very welcome.

Welcome to the Ruru Class Blog for 2019!

Hello, thanks for visiting our 2019 class blog!

We have voted to be the Year Two Ruru Class this year. The New Zealand Ruru, or Morepork are named for their distinctive call. In Maori legend Ruru are known as watchful guardians of the forest. Ruru/Morepork birds are beautiful (just like our Year 2s) and known for their fantastic listening abilities (fingers crossed!)
Thanks again for visiting!
We will be updating the blog regularly so make sure you come and look at all the fantastic things we are doing and making and learning in class this year.
Welcome to the Hihi Class!

Welcome to the Hihi Class!

Welcome to our Hihi (Stitchbird) Class for 2019.

We have some lovely new faces joining us this year and we are looking forward to a year filled with learning and laughter!

This year we are going on a Beach Picnic to Shakespeare Regional Park.  We will visit Tiritiri Matangi where we hope to catch a glimpse of our Hihi namesakes in the flesh.

We can’t wait for Harold to visit us from the Life Education Trust and we know that you will be looking forward to our School Production, Music Festival, as well as Dad’s Day and many more exciting activities.

Hopefully this blog will provide you with an insight into some of the exciting things we do in a school day, so feel free to check in on this page for regular updates.

But, first things first……….Meet our wonderful Hihi Class!

Happy Holidays to you all!

2018 has been a wonderful year and as I begin to reflect, I can’t believe how quickly it has gone!

Thank you for sharing your children with me and allowing me to be a part of their learning journey.

Enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday and see you all in the New Year!

Merry Christmas from the Karearea class!

Aboriginal Art

We made Bull Roarers which are originally from Australia.  They were used in the outbacks of Australia by the Aborigines to communicate to other tribes by spinning them over their heads.

Firstly we had to sand the edges.  Some of us found it very tricky.

After we sanded them we transferred our design onto them then carefully painted them using fine paintbrushes and skewers.  We tried to use designs and animals found in Australia.

Below are our finished Bull Roarers.

Term 4 Highlights

Hi Parents,

Well, just like that, the year is nearly at an end. It’s been a privilege teaching the students of class Korora, and I’m glad I’ll be seeing most of them around next year.

Here’s a couple of highlights from the last few weeks…

Art

The students have produced some really nice pieces of work this term. There was landscapes in the first few weeks, and lately we’ve been drawing and painting still-lifes.

the colour of Sienna’s roof is, well, sienna of course!

Ethan’s philosophy of art is to curve the spine in harmony with the curves of his lines.

Tiger’s controversial technique is to drink the paint-water, so as to be at one with the art.

Class Plays

When you’re a woman of mature years, you need to use the jaw for extra grip.

Oscar is part of an expedition, along with his robot Thomas, to explore a planet inhabited by aliens (Claire and Jack)

Aston wishing he’d brought a gun to this fight.

Chelsea unfortunately underestimates the distance needed for a stage dive.

Golf

We had a great lesson, led by Jenna Gainford.

Thomas wonders why he’s heard adults swearing when playing golf…it’s not that hard?

Golf is a lot more motivating when aiming for human targets.

Science

This term we’ve covered the physics of sound.

Daniel conducts his teams rendition of “it sort of sounds like a song”

Experimenting with glass and water out on the grass means that the crickets provide a backing choir

Luke uses a string telephone to share a piece of juicy gossip with Konstantin

While Claire is testing a paper banger, Chelsea perfects her runway pose.

Athletics

In Week 5, we had our annual Athletics Day.

Ethan’s shadow has already cleared the jump, so you know he’s going to be fine.

Not casting spells, but practicing shotput.

Oral Language

There’s been lots of opportunities for strengthening oral language skills this term: persuasive speeches, news sharing, and sharing presentations for topic.

Harper shares a speech on Lego, ensuring that you’ll be pestered for expensive kits for Christmas.

Ollie sharing on the topic of skateboarding

Poppy using eye-contact to make sure that her audience are as riveted as she expects them to be.

Sienna shares some medals. Chelsea wants one

Sailing

In Week 7 we had our sailing day with Volvo, Learn to Sail. We’re grateful to have gotten such good conditions in a week that wasn’t always pleasant!

Daniel and Tiger looking as smooth as the water.

Luke and Oscar find that sailing is pretty cruisy when you remove the ocean.

Jack looks for unchartered land

Daniel and Tiger see if they can get any fish nibbling on their scalp.

Claire shows no-hands. Poppy resists shaking the boat.

Ollie overboard!
